The Fifth Annual Jersey City PI-E Day will take place Saturday, March 14, 2015.

The appeal of a day dedicated to pi, the number, might seem limited. However, add pie, the pastry, to the equation and even math-phobes anticipate the date.

March 14 (3/14) is Pi Day around the world and the date of Jersey City’s Fifth Annual PI-E Day at the Liberty Science Center. The event celebrates pi, the irrational number, and pie, the fervently loved baked good.

This year’s family friendly activities – many of which are free, some costing $1.00 – include face painting, balloons, math games and crafts, piku (haiku with a math twist), hula-hooping, an Einstein dress up and photo area (Einstein was born on 3/14, which is also the first three digits of pi – 3.14) and of course, delicious pies. Interested bakers have until March 9 to enter the Blue Ribbon Pie Bake Off sponsored by Progressive Pediatrics (entry form with costs and requirements to participate can be found here).  Event-day attendees can purchase sweet and savory pie slices for $3 each at the festival’s Pie Café; coffee, tea, and water will also be available, each for $1.

According to Lissa Welles, she and co-founder Gabby Creery started PI-E Day in 2010, “Because there was a shortage of good PI-E in Jersey City and the World at large.” The pie bake-off “is a fiercely competitive event among the best PI-E bakers in all of Jersey City, both professional and amateur.”

Proceeds from the festival benefit the Learning Community Charter School (LCCS).

PI-E Day will be held on Saturday, March 14 from 12 (noon) to 4 pm at Liberty Science Center, 222 Jersey City Blvd. Admission is $19.75 per adults and $15.75 for children under 12. Tickets can be purchased at Liberty Science Center and includes a LSC pass for the day. Entry is free with a Liberty Science Center membership. A limited number of advance tickets can be purchased for $15 by contacting Gabby Creery at 201-736-8603 or lisa(at)brooklynusa.com or Lissa Welles at 551-655-5860.
